Crayfish, Emerger and Dun's

Being a teacher is nice when we have a snow day so I can sit around and tie some flies. Been wanting to try my hand at a crayfish for the small mouths that live around here. These are my first attempts.

Also tied a couple emergers.

And finished with a couple duns.

Teabag Winged Caddis

Just finished tying my first Teabag Winged Caddis. Followed the tutorial of Tom Herr's in Hatches. http://hatchesmagazine.com/blogs/Hatches/2011/02/02/teabag-winged-caddis-by-tom-herr/
This was a fun fly to tie and not too difficult. Feel pretty good about the first attempt. I didn't have a wing burner so had to cut the wing free hand. Looking forward to tying more of these and can't wait to see what the fish may do to it.

This second one is a simple caddis I made up using some dubbing and deer hair. First time making one of these.

2011 Ice Fishing Derby is Over

Well we had a great time at this years ice fishing derby held last Saturday and Sunday. The weather was good, food was great, kids had a fun time and we even caught a few fish. We were hoping for the big winning rainbow but it never showed up. We did catch some white and yellow perch, one lake trout and a small mouth bass. Here are a few photos of the event.

Chris caught this 21 inch lake trout on my line. Guess I'll have to watch  him next time we go out.
Thinks giving it a little kiss will bring him good luck

Rick and Haley had a blast playing on the lake and riding the snowmobiles.

Ella watched from the bobhouse to see if the tip ups went up and some times had to go out and check them out to make sure they were working.

Chris was our master Chef grilling pepper, onion and sausage subs and marinated chicken and steak. I think we all gained a few pound with all the food we had.

Ice Fishing Derby

Getting ready for the Winnipesaukee Ice Fishing Derby this weekend. This is the big event around here for ice fishermen. People from all over come to the Lakes Region of New Hampshire for this event. Top prize for the largest tagged rainbow is an 18 foot fishing boat. There are many other prizes for other fish. What a great time we have with family and friends. Can't wait to get back out on the lake! Hope the fish know where to find me.

Here his one of several bucktail jigs I tied for this weekend.

Snow Day in NH

Well it's been snowing all day in NH so we didn't have school. Spent most of the day tying some scuds and nymphs. Haven't made these before so it took a couple before I started to be happy at what I was getting. Need to get some more materials so I can make them in different colors. Can't wait to give them a try on the trout this spring. Here are a couple I tied.
