Fished all morning without a bite. Ate lunch and tried a new spot on the river. Caught 2 rainbows right off then nothing else. It was nice to be out again.

Rod Building
So far this fall I have built 2 new switch rods. An 8 and 6wt. The 8 was a kit and the 6 was one that I put the parts together myself. The fun thing about the 6wt was making the handle myself out of cork rings. Both rods cast great and are a lot of fun to fish with. If you haven't tried a switch yet, you don't know what you're missing. I now fish waters I never thought I could ever reach.

Atlantic Salmon Fishing in Quebec
My son and I and a friend made a trip last summer to fish the Matane River in Quebec. Unfortunetly the weather was hot and the water was low so the salmon were not in the biting mood. We did see plenty of big fish which made our blood boil. Tim our friend did manage one nice one on a dry fly.
What beautiful country. Hope to get back there next summer.

Been Awhile
Well it's been a long time since I posted and now I'm trying the Blogger app on my iPad to see if I like it.
I've done a lot of fishing since last post. The most exciting was my trip to Bermuda and bone fishing. Hired a guide one day who showed me the ropes but couldn't manage a bone on the fly. Did catch a hogfish on crabs. So the next day went out on my own on a beach early in the morning. Had great luck. Caught my first bone. It was about 30 inches and took me well into my backing 3 times. What a blast and a memory I'll have for a life time. Can't wait for another chance to go after bones!!!

First Atlantic Salmon
Fished for Atlantic Salmon with my son yesterday. Was able to get one to the net. Had another hit but couldn't attach. My son was able to get into one but it came off before he was able to land it. He got several other hits.

April 1st Salmon Season Open
Salmon season opened today and was able to get out this morning for a couple hours. Took the kayak since it was a beautiful calm morning. Sunny with temps in the 20s. Lake was 40 degrees. Glad there was no wind. Was able to catch 3 salmon and lost one trolling flies on the surface. Great way to start the 2012 season.

My First of 2012
Thursday afternoon saw beautiful weather here in the Lakes Region of New Hampshire. So after work I headed to a local river to try to get my first trout on a fly for the 2012 season. Water was a little high so put on three different flies and weight to get them down. A soft hackle, hares ear and a olive feedinator. After about 4 casts the first rainbow was on the feedinator. A real nice fish. Fought him a few minutes while he made three leaps then off he came. After losing the olive feedinator to the trees I tied on a red one. Wasn't too long when I got another hit. This time I took my time and finally got him into the net. Another real beauty. Made my net look tiny. First fish of 2012, a 19 inch rainbow.

Long Time
It's been a while since I last posted. Since then I've done a lot of fishing but now that the weather is colder I've turned to tying more. Here are my first attempts at tying some salmon flies. Looking forward to giving them a try.

On the Saco
Fished the Saco this morning. Started off slow with a couple brookies taken on a hopper. Then switched to a Cooper John and got a few more. Around 8 they started rising but couldn't see what they were going after so put on a size 20 Adams and that was the ticket. For the next hour it was a blast!!!! All brookies. Around 9:30 the kayak hatch started and that send the fish back to the bottom. Caught a few more with nymphs but the river started to get too busy for me so came home. Another nice morning to be out on the river.

Brook Trout Fishing in Maine
Went for a couple days in Maine fishing for brook trout. Had a great time. We used large streamers in hopes for the big ones. The water was fast and high do to the release of the dam during the day but at night they decreased the flow and the water calmed down so it was a bit more manageable. We were able to get a few larger ones to take the fly. Great trip and hope to soon go again.

On the Salt Again
Welp had a great morning out on the salt. Macks were plentiful but stripers were slow to the end of the morning. Only caught one mid morning. Tried all our good spots. Last stop floated down a section in about 8 feet of water. Every pass they would come screaming out of a deep dark area into the shallow and slam the macks. It was sooooo cool watching every hit then waiting a few seconds while the line tore of the real then close the bail with fish on. We even had a double. Too bad we ran out of bait. They were slamming even the dead bait we threw out. I was able to get three in the boat and and my friend got 2 within 15 minutes. Lost several others. My friend lost a really big one. Saw it for a moment then it broke his line. The coolest thing was watching them come in to hit the bait. Fresh bait would go nuts trying to get away from them. They even jumped out of the water to avoid being eaten.
This one is a 29 incher that is now in the freezer.

Stripers Today
I've been doing a lot of trout fishing but haven't got on and posted much lately. Today my son and his friend went with me to do some other fishing. We headed to the coast of New Hampshire for some striper fishing. It was a great day on the water. Caught a few and lost a lot but had a blast. Here a a few shots of those that made it into the boat.
Chris with a 28 incher.

Another Trip to Pittsburg
Just spent another 5 days fishing in Pittsburg NH. This time I fished with my son Chris. We had a blast. Caught a lot of rainbows. Tried a lot of different places but always came back to one pond that was really producing fish. That's probably the last trip up there this season. Now it will be concentrating on ponds, brooks and rivers closer to home.
